TWENTY-NINE
GINA
I have to get the key out of the garage door before someone sees it.
It took some convincing to get Marta and Grant to let the two of us clean up the brunch dishes and pick up the kitchen after the worldâs most awkward meal, but they finally acquiesced, letting Owen and me carry the plates, cups, silverware, and leftovers into the kitchen. The dishwasher is on the other side of the kitchen from the garage door, thank God.
The key is still there. I have to force myself not to stare at it. How Owen, Grant, or Marta havenât noticed it yet, I have no idea, and I also have no idea how much longer my luck will hold out.
âWhy donât you load the dishes since I know a lot of people are super particular about how they get put in there?â I glance at Owen, doing everything I can to tear my attention away from the door. If he sees me staring at it, then everythingâs going to fall apart.
âOh, smart. Mom can be really funny about how the plates are put in the bottom rack.â He kisses me on the temple. âYouâre so kind. I remember once, in high school, I loaded everything incorrectly and she made me take it all out and do it again. They were filthy, Gina. It was gross.â
âLetâs not have a repeat performance.â I grab the orange juice and put it on the top shelf in the fridge. When I close the door and look over my shoulder at Owen, Iâm pleased to see him loading the dishes.
The key.
The fear of it being found kept interrupting me during brunch, but each time Iâd think up a clever way of escaping to the kitchen myself, it was thwarted.
There was more than enough orange juice and water on the table for everyone unless I drank so much I risked peeing myself. Marta had, of course, loaded the table to groaning with all the food theyâd brought from Main Street. Unfortunately, the only option I had was to sit through the meal and wait until I could escape in here. Now my only focus is the key and how Iâm going to get it out of the door. As long as Owen stays occupied, I should have a minute or two.
Even so, I cast one more glance over my shoulder before hurrying to the garage door. The key is still there, taunting me, and I grab it, then twist it hard to the side. âCome on,â I mutter, wiping my other hand across my forehead. Iâm sweating, an unfortunate combination of stress over talking about what happened to Aunt Bethany and the fear that someone will catch me with the key.
It doesnât move.
Another harried glance over my shoulder. Owenâs whistling as he rinses the plates and loads them.
I twist the key to the other side. Itâs stuck now, fully lodged in there like only a locksmith is going to be able to get it out. I groan, squeeze my eyes shut, and exhale.
